- Subclavian vein – infraclavicular and supraclavicular
- Internal jugular vein – anterior, central and posterior
- External jugular vein
- Gives an accurate impression of the degree of difficulty which can be experienced when cannulating the subclavian and jugular veins
- Palpable carotid artery
- Sternocleidomastoid muscle which divides into the sternal and clavicular heads and sternal notch which sinks 2-4 cm when palpated
