Adam,Rouilly’s Age Simulation Set has recently formed an integral part of a new Dementia Simulation Training programme at Oxford Brookes University.
According to the UK’s Alzheimer’s Society, around 850,000 people currently live with dementia in the UK – a number which is set to increase to over 1 million by 2025 and over 2 million by 2051. This provides a unique set of factors in patient care, which all healthcare professionals must be competent in dealing with.
In recognition of this, and the Government’s National Dementia Strategy, Oxford Brookes University has teamed with Vale House Care Home, also based in Oxford, to provide a comprehensive training programme for all manner of medical professionals to build dementia awareness, gather insights into the requirements of those with dementia and develop skills in supporting people with dementia more effectively.
The Age Simulation Set combines a system of wearable devices to provide the user with instantaneous simulation of the effects of ageing, and the difficulty associated in mobility with performing every day tasks such as walking, sitting, cooking or answering the phone.
Specially devised goggles simulate degraded vision due to cataracts and earplugs reduce hearing ability. Elbow and knee restrictors simulate reduced joint mobility and arm and leg weights simulate weakened muscle power. Wearing the gloves and finger restrictors reduces sense of touch for fingers and the ability to grasp objects making trainee clumsy, while a back brace allows the trainee to experience the stooped posture specific to ageing.
This empathetic approach means that trainees experience first hand the restrictions ageing places on the body, and can therefore adjust care in their work setting accordingly.
